Attractions
Beaches
Ixtapa is famous for its beautiful beaches and warm waters. Zihuatanejo Bay has four protected and tranquil beaches, excellent places to sunbathe or water ski, surf, wind-surf sail and dive. The main beaches of Ixtapa are:
Playa Larga
A beautiful, rarely crowded beach, located between Zihuatanejo and the airport. It features several small palapa restaurants, hammocks, and wading pools for children.
Playa Palmar
Ixtapa's main beach, this is a lovely white-sand arc on the edge of the Hotel Zone, with dramatic rock formations silhouetted in the sea. The surf here can be rough, so use caution and don’t swim when a red flag is posted.
La Ropa Beach
This large beach is located in the center of the Zihuatanejo Bay and is known for clear and calm water. Plenty of water sports are there for the asking: parasailing, waterskiing, wind surfing and jet-skiing.
Municipal Beach
About a half mile long, this beach is located right in front of the downtown center. Great for people watching, and seeing the fishermen come back in from their day. There are several fresh seafood restaurants set up right on the sidewalk and sand, where they also have palapas and lounge chairs.
Isla Encantada
A great alternative, this is a little-known small beach in a tiny cove at the northern end of Zihuatanejo Bay. Great snorkeling and fresh seafood.
Golf
Ixtapa is home to two world-class golf courses, the Marina Ixtapa and the Palma Real, making this tropical destination a true paradise for golfers of all levels of expertise.
Bars and Discos
A night out is the perfect cap to an idyllic Ixtapa day. Zihuatanejo has plenty of downtown bars where you can listen to the sounds of trova, salsa and boleros on the many cool terraces. Popular discotheques and bars in Ixtapa include Señor Frog’s and Carlos n’ Charlies. You can catch a live music performance in one of the many hotel lobby-bars, as well as some excellent floor shows.
Restaurants
Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo is host to more than 150 restaurants offering a wide choice of local and international cuisine. Some eateries are located along the beach offering the chance to dine while enjoying a breathtaking sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Local specialties include fish and shrimp tacos, ceviche cocktail, zihuatanejo tiritas (thin strips of marinated fish with onions), red clams, huge locally-caught red snapper and lobster (in season).
Sport Fishing
The Ixtapa /Zihuatanejo area has incredible sportfishing opportunities. Big game fish such as sailfish, dorado, marlin, roosterfish and yellowfin tuna abound as well as smaller fare including Spanish mackerel, bonito, yellowtail jacks and barracuda. The area is considered one of the best sailfishing destinations in the world.
Sports
Outdoor sports enthusiasts were the first to really embrace Ixtapa as a destination. No surprise. The area is world-renowned for its superb deep-sea fishing and scuba diving. Those who like a little adrenaline in their vacations can also try their hand at surfing, jetskiing, snorkeling, boating, and kayaking.
Shopping
Like to go home with some fabulous finds as well as a tan? Ixtapa delivers. You’ll find exclusive designer boutiques and renowned decorators, as well as beachwear stores and the famous arts-and-crafts market, all conveniently located along Boulevard Ixtapa.
In Zihuatanejo, there are stores all over town, particularly downtown. Stroll along Fishermen’s Walkway and take in the sights and sounds. Take some time to visit the old church, the arts-and-crafts market, or visit the art galleries on Juan N. Alvarez Street where you’ll find the works of great artists as well as the flavor, color and warmth of Zihuatanejo. Stroll through the Mercado de Artesanias, a craft market with fine goods from all over Mexico. Look for locally crafted Guerrero masks. These colorful wooden masks depict demons, devils, and animals, and were traditionally used in ceremonies and dances. Also keep your eye out for fine Taxco silver.
